Barbayannis Ouzo of Plomari
The people of Plomari are proud of their 'ouzo' heritage and not only is ouzo produced here using both traditional and more modern techniques, but there is also an ouzo museum offering an interesting insight into it's production and history.
Entrance is free and ouzo tasting can be arranged.
The lesvos water gives life to a superior variety of aniseed and to hundreds of rare sweet-smelling herbs and in 1860, when Efstathios J. Barbayannis arrived at the port of Plomari from the city of Odessa in Russia, he used his knowledge and skill to create his own distillery.
The Barbayannis family has preserved the 140-year-old tradition faithfully and follows the footsteps of it's founder. With much love and artistic feeling, the family members carefully select pure, natural ingredients and take special care in applying the distillation procedure, still performed in the old, traditional way.
Today, not only is the name Barbayannis associated by a world wide audience with excellent ouzo, but they have founded a museum dedicated to it's history and production.
