The Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest
The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest was established in 1994 to study, research, promote, preserve and conserve the unique Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a designated Protected Natural Monument.
On the road from Andissa, 4km before the village you will find the incredible Petrified Forest. You can see it's location and full details of this national park by pressing on the link on the left of this page. In the village of Sigri itself there is a superb museum dedicated to the forest which hosts a wealth of information as well as some stunning examples of petrified wood. The Museum was established in 1994 to study, research, promote, preserve and conserve the unique Petrified Forest of Lesvos, a designated Protected Natural Monument. The museum building is a ground floor stone building accessible to the disabled, and covers an area of 1570 square metres. It can be reached by two routes. Either a stroll through the streets of the village of Sigri, but this is a steep climb and not recommended for wheelchair users, or by the new road which leads directly to the building and is accessed by turning left at the sign for the museum just before entering the village.
This really is a wonderful place and exhibits here include unique finds from excavations including rare petrified trunk sections, fossilized branches, roots, leaves and fruits from the trees of the rich forests of Aegis 20 million years ago and an audio visual presentation about the creation of the forest. Temporary exhibits include Photography Exhibitions, Musical Events, Lectures, Conferences, Scientific Meetings and Discussions and Book Presentations.
A Museum shop provides you with high quality and educational gifts to take away to remind you of your visit and the coffee shop serves hot and cold beverages as well as traditional Lesvos snacks. A great lace to unwind whist enjoying the view over the bay and village of Sigri.
