The Saint Andreas Church & Shrine in Skala Eressos
The St. Andreas Church
The church of Saint Andreas is located three streets behind the sea front on the South side of the village. It is an impressive building of pink rendered brick with a superb bell tower and is surrounded by palm trees giving it the appearance of a Italian renaissance building. The church holds icons and religious artifacts of local importance and is an important local focus of prayer and service at which all are welcome. Please remember not to wear shorts to the church !
The Shrine to St. Andreas
At the end of the basilica ruins, just before the entrance to the museum of Skala Eressos there lies a small chapel. This beautifully constructed building houses a shrine to St Andreas. As one enters, one finds a coffin like box which is said to contain the bones of the famous Saint. The locals visit the shrine and as is common practice, light candles for loved ones and in memory of those now departed.
